Alex has been a Strength & Conditioning coach in elite sport for the past 20 years. Over this time Alex has held a number of positions internationally in both professional team sports and across a number of Olympic sports within National Sports Institutes in Europe, the Middle East and Australia. Alex has predominantly worked with Track & Field sprinters over the past decade but has recently moved back to team sports and is currently starting his third season as Head of Strength and Power with the GWS GIANTS.

AFL Draftee to Debutant: The Accelerated Paidískoi
In this presentation, Alex will be discussing the unique challenge of transitioning an AFL Draftee to their debut. When a highly talented 18 year old’s get drafted into the AFL system, they can leave home within 3 days and may only be 5 months away from playing their first AFL game. How do you prepare them for this?
There are similarities with the critical third stage in the ancient Spartan warrior training from 17-19 years of age – in the reserve army and on the verge of becoming a hēbōntes (fully-fledged member of the Spartan army).
- “The Wishlist” exiting the paídes the second stage of Spartan warrior training – what performance coaches desire in the entry level player and what the key targets of the high school and academy performance coaches should be.
- “Entry is never a flat line” Sport vs Sparta – Everyone enters with different abilities, training history and experiences. What’s the first step?
- “The slow burn and the raging fire” – running and training loads will slowly and gradually increase in the first-year player providing an opportunity to accelerate gains in neuromuscular performance from the outset.
- “Developing to perform” – Although biologically mature they are still developing athletes, but they need to be ready to play at senior level and they need to play well to get re-singed. How to balance LTAD and accelerated performance to thrive and not just survive.

Lachlan Wilmot: The LTAD Approach to Plyometrics
Lachlan Wilmot has been working in the fitness industry going on 15 years, working with both the general population and elite level athletes. After completing a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science, Lachlan continued his education, completing his Honours thesis in Sports Science. Lachlan spent 8 years as the Senior Athletic Performance Coach specialising in strength and power at the GWS Giants AFL Club based in Sydney, after previous involvement with the AIS-AFL Academy and NSW/ACT AFL Academy. Lachlan then moved across to the Parramatta Eels NRL Club to take on the role of Head of Athletic Performance at the Parramatta Eels NRL Club, after 2 seasons at the club he made the decision to transition into his private company Athletes Authority. Lachlan is currently the Director of Coaching and Performance at Athletes Authority in Sydney, a company that specialises in athlete development and coach education.
When looking at the long-term development of a youth athlete, a fine balance of systems and play allow their progression in all aspects of jumping, landing and change of direction. Coordination comes and goes with the stage of their height velocity, so being able to progress and regress them up and down the plyometric continuum becomes paramount. In this practical we will look at:
- The plyometric continuum and how it applies to the LTAD model.
- How to regress plyometric options while still building an athletes jump/land capabilities.
- Practical cues and demonstrations of key movements.
Ranell Hobson: Developing Speed In Youth Athletes
Ranell has been a Strength and Speed Coach & Coach Educator for over 20 years. Described as “at the forefront of youth development in Australia” and “A true expert in Speed”. In 2019 Ranell was awarded the ‘ASCA Performance Development Coach of the Year’ for her work at the Academy of Sport Speed Australia. Having produced more sub 7-sec, 60-yard dash performances in NSW Baseball’s history (U16 & U18 players) and in her work as S&C Coach of the Premiership winning GWS Fury Premier League U23’s Netball team. Ranell is the creator of the ASSA Speed system which develops both physical and technical competencies for speed, minimising injuries & maximising performance.
In this presentation Ranell will take you through her systematic approach to developing efficient mechanics for linear speed including the use of warm up as a Physical Readiness assessment for Speed.
Ranell will explain how getting the best out of youth athletes is not just about coaching running mechanics but requires development of Mobility, Stability, Co-ordination, Strength and Power competencies.
This practical session will include:
- Qualitative Physical Readiness Warm up
- Technical drills for postural integrity, foot strike, foot recovery and stride cycle
- Integrating strength and power into youth speed sessions
- Using attentional focus and external cueing
Dr. Craig Harrison: Formalising Informality – Using Play to Enhance Movement Skill
An expert in youth athlete development, Craig specialises in the physical and mental sides of sport. He is a coach and researcher with a unique ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple way that inspires action. Craig teaches youth athletes how to unlock personal performance & fulfil their sporting potential.
Champions start out in the backyard, on the streets, and in the parks of their local neighbourhood. Or at least, they did a generation ago.
But life has changed.
Structure is now king. Afterschool activities have a start and finish time, a strict programme to follow, and an adult in charge.
Kids don’t play like they used to, and it’s is affecting the way they move.
In this presentation and practical workshop, Dr Craig Harrison will discuss the acquisition of movement skill in the context of strength and conditioning for kids. In particular, using the latest research, he will present a case for exploring movement in our sessions with deliberate play and ‘formalising the informality’. In the practical will build on this idea by providing a variety of practical examples.
James Baker: Creating A LTAD Pathway to High Performance
James is a Strength and Conditioning coach and Sport Science Lead for the Track & Field Development and Senior Sprints & Hurdles programmes at Aspire Academy in Doha, Qatar. In 2017, James was awarded the UKSCA’s S&C Coach of the Year for Youth Sport for his work developing a school-based LTAD Pathway in the UK.
In this talk James will present his LTAD pathway looking across three key phases Foundation (11-12 years old), Development (13-15 years old) and Performance (16+). Providing insight to critical considerations and a progressive training curriculum for developing strength, power, speed & agility across the phases. In addition to this he will discuss the assessing and monitoring the development of key physical components to performance in Track & Field as well as how they utilize growth and maturation data in the Aspire Academy Development programme.
Dr. Simon Harries – Rehabilitation: Considerations for Developing Athletes
Simon Harries is a Senior Athletic Performance Specialist at the Greater Western Sydney Giants AFL club, where he is responsible for coordinating the rehabilitation of injured players.
He is an accredited Strength and Conditioning coach that has spent the last decade working with elite and developing level athletes across AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Rugby Sevens. He received his undergraduate degree in Physical Development, Health and Physical Education Teaching in 2010 and his PhD in Human Physiology in 2017, both from The University of Newcastle.
Simon will provide an overview of the rehabilitation framework he has utilised across multiple sports. With a particular focus on highlighting the critical period between the restoration of general athletic capacities and readiness to return to play.
- Identifying key differences between youth and adult athletes. Discussion of strategies to cater for these differences and determine if successful criteria for rehabilitation programs should be adjusted to meet the needs of developing athletes.
- Identifying any other considerations relevant for rehabilitating youth athletes from injury
- Athletic Development scaffold – providing an overview with worked examples utilising a graded athletic development framework to guide the rehabilitation process to ensure restoration of global athletic competency and capacities. Identifying where differences of approach may be required for working with Youth athletes
